Pore Pressure Diffusion and Onset of Induced Seismicity

چکیده
The Raton Basin of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico experienced a significant increase in seismicity over the last several decades, including two M5+ earthquakes. started soon after an wastewater disposal associated with coal-bed methane production. Twenty-nine injection wells have operated Basin, high-rate injectors located within kilometer most seismically active regions. We developed pore pressure model to investigate relationship between diffusion onset induced seismicity, emphasis on Trinidad fault zones. Our indicates that sufficient had accumulated northern extent zone induce at time early-stage seismic activity. hydrogeologic architecture played key role controlling perturbation. basal sedimentary interval moderately low diffusivity restricted vertical diffusion, creating substantial lag becoming expression perturbation spatiotemporal conjunction modeled pressures suggests was likely triggered by diffusion.

Pore pressure/stress coupling and its implications for seismicity
Periodic pressure measurements made during the depletion of oil fields and virgin pressure measurements through normallyand over-pressured sequences in sedimentary basins both demonstrate that changes in pore pressure and minimum horizontal stress (σh) are coupled to one another. Pore pressure/stress coupling is predicted by poroelastic theory. Data from the North Sea (Ekofisk Field) and Texas ...

Seismicity in the U.S. midcontinent has increased by orders of magnitude over the past decade. Spatiotemporal correlations of seismicity to wastewater injection operations have suggested that injection-related pore fluid pressure increases are inducing the earthquakes. We present direct evidence linking earthquake occurrence to pore pressure increase in the U.S. midcontinent through time-lapse ...

متن کاملINDUCED SEISMICITY. Seismicity triggered by fluid injection-induced aseismic slip.
Anthropogenic fluid injections are known to induce earthquakes. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, and our ability to assess the seismic hazard associated with geothermal energy or unconventional hydrocarbon production remains limited. We directly measure fault slip and seismicity induced by fluid injection into a natural fault. We observe highly dilatant and slow [~4 micrometers pe...
